Patient Information
Guide
Welcome to Mayo General Hospital.
Mayo General Hospital is
an acute hospital with a total of 226 beds. Its specialities include,
Surgery, Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and
Gynaecology.
The Mission of the Western
Health Board is to promote the highest attainable level of health for
all persons in its functional area.
Your
Admission
On entering the main
entrance to the hospital, you will note the reception desk. Please
advise the receptionist that you are for
admission.
Please bring the following into
hospital:
- Any medication that you are
taking, or any medical appliance normally used.
- A night-dress/Pyjamas,
Slippers,
- Two Towels,
- Essential
Toiletries
Your property should be
clearly marked.
Patients should try and keep
property to a minimum whilst in hospital, as space is limited. You
are advised not to bring valuables or large amounts of cash into the
hospital as responsibility will not be accepted by the hospital if
possessions are lost or stolen. However, you may hand in wallets,
etc. to the Ward Sister for safe keeping if
necessary.
Mealtimes
Patients may choose their
menu on a daily basis. Meals are served at the following
times:
Breakfast: 8.00
am
Dinner: 12 noon
Tea: 5.00 p.m.
Eligibility For
Services
You are entitled to avail
of Hospital care as either a public or a private
patient.
As a Public In
Patient:
- You will be required to
avail of a public bed,
- You will not pay
Consultants fees,
- You may be subject to a
waiting list.
As a Private
patient:
- You will be required to
avail of private or semi private accommodation when it is
available. It is not possible to book private accommodation in
advance.
- You are the private patient
of your own Consultant, and the other Consultants involved in your
care, and are liable for their fees. We have a direct billing
system with V.H.I., so it is very important that you provide us
with your membership number on admission
Charges
If you are a public
patient and a medical card holder, you are exempt from hospital
charges. Medical Card holders should bring their card with
them.
Non-Medical card holders are
liable for the Government levy, which is currently £25.00 per
day, to a maximum of £250.00, in one year.
Visiting
Visiting Hours are 2pm to
4pm and 7pm to 8pm each day. Normally, only two visitors should be
present with a patient at any given time. Visiting times are flexible
if patients are critically ill relatives may visit by arrangement
with the Ward Sister.
Children visiting the hospital
should be confined to the children of in-patients and should be under
the strict supervision of an adult. It is not advised to take babies
and small children into the wards due to the risk of infection.
Parents of children in the Children's ward may visit their children
at any time.
Discharge
Your Consultant will
decide when you are fit for discharge.
As much notice as possible of
your discharge will be given to you, but occasionally, this may be
limited to a few hours due to a sudden demand for
beds.
If you are to receive treatment
as an Out Patient, you will receive an appointment before you leave
the ward. You may also receive a letter for your G.P. which you
should deliver to him/her after discharge.

Smoking
Mayo General Hospital is a
smoke free zone - Department of Health
Regulation.
Mail
Letters to in-patients
should specify full name, and ward. Mail is delivered to patients
each morning .
Toilet
Facilities
Bathroom and toilet
facilities are close at hand for all patients. Public toilets are
located throughout the Hospital.
Religious
Services
Mass is held on Sundays,
in the Hospital Restaurant, at 11am. A chaplain is available at all
times.
Other religious services are
provided by Chaplains, nominated by the various
denominations.
Hospital
Shop
There is a shop, and
coffee area located within the Hospital, near the Main
Entrance.
Restaurant
There is a hospital
restaurant which is located in the basement, near the X- Ray
Department on sub level one. The restaurant is open to relatives of
patients and visitors.
Complaints
If at any stage you are
unhappy with the service, please report this to the Ward Sister prior
to the patient being discharged, or as soon as possible. All
complaints will be fully investigated, and replied
to.
