What's New
Retirement of Sr. Lottie Walsh
25/10/99
Today, Sr. Lottie Walsh retired
after thirty-seven years service. Lottie has worked in the Special
Care Baby Unit in Mayo General since it's inception, and has an
incredible record of caring and kindness to all the people of Mayo.
She leaves behind a proud and very successful SCBU, one of the finest
of it's kind in this country, which is due in no small measure to her
unflagging hard work and enthusiasm. There are so many who will
always remember her kindness and humanity in times of trouble. We all
wish her a happy and active retirement.
The New Artworks!
The new Temporary Entrance
resulting from Phase II building works has taken on an incredibly
cheerful and bright look, thanks to the sterling efforts of
Castlebar's Neighbourhood Youth Project. This shows the artists with
some of their work
New Car Parking
The first discernible benefit of
Phase II comes into operation on Monday 12th. July when the hospitals
new car park opens. This is a massive purpose build pay car park at
the back of the existing Maternity Unit. Very reasonable charges are
at the level of 50p for the first two hours or part thereof, and 50p
per hour thereafter.
Simultaneously with the
introduction of this will come the dreaded clamping operation!
Discussions are in progress with a commercial firm to provide this
service virtually from the opening of the new car park
As anyone knows who regularly
visits the hospital, illegal parking frequently blocks access for
everybody, including emergency vehicles, and staff responding to
emergencies. This situation will now be firmly taken in hand, so be
careful where you park!
New General Manager
A new General Manager has just
taken up duty at Mayo General Hospital. He is Mr. Noel Brett. He
comes to us from the NHS, where he worked in the London Area. He is a
native of Castlebar. We welcome him and his family home, and wish him
well in his new post
Turning the Sod
22/1/99
On Friday 22nd. January 1999 we
were visited by the Minister for Health and Children, Mr. Brian Cowen
TD, who laid the Foundation Stone of Phase II of the Hospital in the
presence of the Chairman of the Western Health Board, Mr. Pat
Kilbane, the CEO, Dr. Sheelagh Ryan, and a large gathering of Health
Board members, members of the Project/Design Team, Hospital staff and
Oireachtas and local authority members.
Prominent among the gathering were
the Chairman of the Friends of Mayo General Hospital, Mr. John
Caulfield, and other members of this very active support group, who
put so much effort into making this project a reality.
The construction is in phases, with
the CT Scan Unit hopefully being up and running before the end of
this year, and Section 1 of the building being occupied and
functional in 15 months time.
A great deal of hard work remains
to the equipping and staffing committees to achieve these timetables,
but so far they have worked extremely well together, and the goals
should be achievable.
The Project Manager will be Mr.
Michael Fahey, who has worked with this project since it's inception,
and who is moving from his post as Hospital Administrator to
supervise further progress on a full time basis. We wish him well in
his new responsibilities, and know he will achieve a very fine
hospital for the people of Mayo.
