I think that what we've seen, and experienced, in this regard is a perfect example of what happens when officialdom gets involved in the planning of celebrations. I spent New Year's Eve in Ballina as usual. Normally the Pubs are filled to overflowing and the Town Centre packed with revellers dancing and singing in the streets around Midnight; a Band too is normally in attendance. What happened this year? Most pubs closed early (some did not open at all), there was no Band, and the streets were practically deserted at Midnight. Some celebration!!! Seamus Brennan (the man who proposed the all-night pub extension) thinks that the country's celebrations "went wonderfully". Personally I never saw less celebrations on New Year's Eve and think that all of those candles should be shoved up Brennan's 'you-know-where'!!!!
