UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF IRELAND - COUNTRY LIFE

Straw, Hay and Rushes exhibition

Learn about the remarkable ingenuity and skills of our rural ancestors at the Straw, Hay and Rushes exhibition on Level B of the Museum of Country Life. The exhibition demonstrates how ordinary people were extraordinarily creative when it came to crafting the things they needed for everyday life - using the natural materials available. Some of the objects on display include a rush riding saddle, baskets, beehives, mats, mattresses, chairs, collars and more. The exhibition can be viewed during museum opening hours and admission is free.

Science challenge workshops

How do you launch an egg into flight without cracking it? Explore this science challenge and more at two hands-on, STEM workshops for children, brought to you by Toodlelou, at the Museum of Country Life for the Easter holidays. The workshops take place on Tuesday, April 18, at 11am and 1pm. Toodlelou is a Galway-based organisation delivering creative science workshops, aimed at growing and encouraging a new generation of curious and innovative thinkers. These workshops are free but booking is required as places are limited. Telephone (094) 90 31751 or email educationtph@museum.ie.

Art workshop: Viking patterns

Did you know the Vikings used decorated silver arms rings as currency? Join the museum's Education Team to learn more about our Viking ancestors at a fun art workshop on Wednesday, April 12, from 2.30 to 3.30pm. Explore a famous hoard of Viking silver arm rings, on display now as part of the museum's temporary Viking exhibition. Find out how these arm rings were decorated and then design and print your own Viking pattern. This is a free event but booking is required. The workshop is suitable for families with children aged 7 years plus. For bookings, telephone (094) 90 31751 or email educationtph@museum.ie.

Knitting circle

The next monthly meeting of the Knitting and Crochet Circle at the Museum of Country Life is on Friday, April 7, from 11am to 1pm. The knitting circle is a great way to learn and share skills, patterns and experiences; meet new people; get some help finishing off a spring project; or start a new one. No booking required and beginners are always welcome to this free, drop-in activity.

Mayo genealogy group

The Mayo Genealogy Group is meeting at the Museum of Country Life on Saturday, April 8, from 11.30am to 1pm.
