Beyond Sackville Street & The Somme
Programme of Events

As part of the National Museum of Ireland's 1916 Public Engagement Programme the National Museum of Ireland-Country Life aims to look at how the lives of ordinary people throughout Ireland were affected by the 1916 Rising, its aftermath and World War 1. Many themes are explored in ‘Beyond Sackville & the Somme' and they include: the impact of social, cultural and economic changes in this period on life in Ireland; the changing role of women and comparisons between experiences of those in rural and urban Ireland as a result of the events of 1916.

Carnation Theatre - 'Midwives of a Nation'

Midwives celebrate the often forgotten contribution of women to the events of 1916. The big and the not so big characters of which there are so many: Elizabeth O'Farrell, Margaret Skinnider, Countess Markievicz, Winnie Carnie to name but a few. These ladies were the dispatchers, the doctors, the First-Aiders, the snipers, the tea makers, the gun runners...the list goes on! Film: The Battle of the Somme
