TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS
New Exhibition:
Opening in the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life in early November
Planet Earth: Our Place in Space.
Based on the geological collections of the National Museum of Ireland – Natural History, this exhibition includes a collection of meteorites, many of which fell in Ireland, that tell us more about the origins of our planet. A highlight is the Limerick Meteorite that fell near Adare, County Limerick in 1813, Ireland's largest ever meteorite weighing in at 27 kilos. The exhibition will also feature some of the folk traditions associated with the moon and the stars.
Moylough Belt Shrine:
A Medieval Treasure from County Sligo The Moylough Belt Shrine was found in Moylough, Co. Sligo in the 1940s by local man John Towey when he was cutting turf. It consists of four hinged sections made of bronze. These contain fragments of a leather belt. The Shrine was decorated with silver, glass and enamel. The Moylough Belt Shrine dates from the eighth century and is one of the great treasures of medieval Ireland. The Moylough Belt Shrine is the only known surviving example of a belt shrine in Ireland. Running until June 2009.
Running until Autumn 2008:
Romantic Stitches and Realist Sketches
The Museum exhibition will show a range of early 20th Century Aran knitwear and a series of drawings by Seán Keating RHA which were used to illustrate an early marketing brochure developed by businessman, Pádraig Ó Síocháin in the 1960s & 1970s to promote Aran knitwear worldwide. The exhibition focuses on the unique marketing story of the Aran knitwear as well as highlighting some of the traditions associated with the stitches. Admission free.
