Traditions of Mumming in Ireland
Wednesday 1 December 2004 @ 7.30pm

We invite you to the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life,
Turlough Park, Castlebar, Co. Mayo for a social evening with a difference.

What is Mumming?
Mumming is a traditional folk play with verses in rhyme
Performed by members of the community around Christmas time,
Usually performed within each home
With the furniture cleared giving room to roam.

Lecture "The Hidden Meaning of Mumming and the Mask"
Jim Ledwith looks at the tradition of Mumming
throughout Ireland.

Play Traditional Mummers Christmas Play featuring a range of traditional Mummer's characters including Brian Boru, Granuaille, WB Yeats and many, many more......  Performed by Co. Sligo Sidhe Gaoithe Mummers Group.
Display Take a look at the National Museum of Ireland's collection of Mummer's dolls with Curator Clodagh Doyle

Jim Ledwith has organised numerous Mummer's festivals in Co. Fermanagh and has spoken and written extensively on the subject of Mumming in Ireland. Earlier this year, he organised the first visit by an Irish Mummers group to the largest Eastern European Mummers festival in Bulgaria. He is currently finalising arrangements for the permanent exhibition of Mumming characters in Ireland. 

Co. Sligo Sidhe Gaoithe Mummers Group are regular performers of Mummers plays in the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life and throughout the Northwest.

Cost: EUR10 per person. Places must be booked before Monday 22 November '04. 
Event subject to minimum number of bookings.
