To mark International Women’s Day, join Caitríona Clear, Department of History NUI Galway, author of "Women of the House: Women’s household work in Ireland 1921-1961" (2000). Age 14+

Workshop. Prepare for St. Patrick’s Day!
Join members of the Education & Outreach Department to make traditional
St. Patrick’s Day crosses. Age 7+

Seachtain na Gaeilge

The National Museum of Ireland celebrates Seachtain na Gaeilge, with a range of events through Irish including tours, storytelling and music.  Irish language Activity Sheets are available. All events are bi-lingual.
All Events are free but booking required

Guided tours in Irish  Turais stiúraithe i nGaeilge

Places are limited to 20. Tours in Irish will also be available throughout the week for groups.  Pre-booking is essential.

St. Patrick's Day Workshops/Ceárdlanna Féile Pádraig

Curator Clodagh Doyle will give a short talk on the life and festival of St. Patrick.  Afterwards make traditional St. Patrick's Day badges.  7 years + This event is fully booked

See the Easter cards on display in the Calendar Year Section of the museum and make your own cards for Easter with artist Agnes Nyland. Age 7+

Workshop. Decorating Easter Eggs!
Visit the Calendar Year Section of the museum and see the decorated eggs on display. Afterwards decorate eggs with staff of the Education & Outreach Department. Age 7+
 
Sunday 27th March: 2.30-4.30pm
Treasure Hunt. It’s Easter Sunday!
Join Brendan McDonnell of the Education & Outreach Department in the hunt for Easter Eggs and also find the decorated eggs on display in the museum. Age 7+
 
Wednesday 30th March: 2.30-3.30pm
Strawboys Hats
"Usually they wore, hats, masks or cloaks made of straw"
Strawboys often attended weddings and joined in the celebrations. Join local craftsman Ted Kelly as he weaves straw to make a strawboys hat. Age 7+



APRIL

Performance. Set Dancing!

Take the opportunity to learn the Derradda set with John Joe Geraghty, Newport. Beginners, experienced and inexperienced dancers welcome.

Workshop. Wattle Weaving
In Summer 2003 a house building skills project took place on site. Join wattle weaver Joe Gowran for this ‘hands on’ workshop.

Be entertained by All Ireland Scór winner, Pat Mc Govern and his daughter Aisling, as they recite poetry, stories and sing songs relating to past events.

Workshop. Water Divining
Join Austin Mc Tiernan, Water Diviner, to find out about water divining. Afterwards explore the grounds to find underground water and other aspects of divining. Age 7+

Talk & Demonstration. The Beasts of Burden – The Donkey.
See a block wheel cart and donkey in action! The block wheel cart was constructed on site in summer 2004. Join Rob Steinke, to hear about the work of the donkey and see the display of associated equipment and materials.

Join Jean Beattie as she demonstrates the traditional way of making butter and hear about some of the folklore associated with making butter. Age 7+

Michael Moore, Teagasc, will talk about modern farming practices, the role of the Rural Environment Protection Scheme (REPS) and their influence on the environment. Age 7+

ENFO Travelling Exhibition - Walls to Wildflowers.
A visual and informative display of Irish hedgerows, dry stone walls, urban amenities, ponds, dunes and wildflower meadows, highlighting the importance of conserving our natural landscape. Age 7+

Join local Wildlife Ranger, Maurice McDonnell to learn about the wildlife on the grounds of Turlough Park House and the surrounding area. Age 7+

Join Mary Walsh and Eileen Healy to learn how to make boxty on an open fire. Age 7+ >

Demonstration. Baa baa black sheep have you any wool! Shearing, Spinning, and Knitting!

Watch local farmer Alan Wood shearing a sheep. Then see Patricia McNevin card and spin the fleece to make wool ready for knitters, Marcella McDonnell & Mary Gallagher. Age 7+

Workshop. Summer Stitches -Wool Crochet
Crochet has been in the family of Mary Mc Granahan for generations. Take this opportunity to have a go and try out this traditional craft. Age 7+
