JANUARY

Sunday 1 January: 2.30-3.30pm

Theatrical Performance. The Mummer’s Play

Watch the Sligo Sidhe Gaoithe Mummers bring to life such characters as St. Patrick, Gráinne Uaile, Queen Maeve and many more in a traditional Mummer’s play.

Workshop. Winter Collage

Recreate your own wintery landscape of the grounds of Turlough Park using natural materials with Lorna Elms of the Education and Outreach Department. Age 7+

Sunday 8 January: 2.30-3.30pm

Tour & Workshop. Sponges & Transfers, a Temporary Exhibition of Earthenware Mugs

Look at the techniques and designs on these popular household objects and then decorate your own ceramic piece with Tom Doyle of the Education & Outreach Department. Age 7+

Wednesday 11 January: 2.30-3.30pm

Tour. Sponges & Transfers, a Temporary Exhibition of Earthenware Mugs

Tour our recent additions to the Museum's collections. The patterns are colourful and the display reflects their influences from nature and landscapes. Age 7+

Demonstration. Copperworks

Join Copperworker Andy Harris of Coolmountain Craft Co-op as he demonstrates this

craft using hand-tools and recycled materials. Age 7+

Wednesday 18 January: 2.30-3.30pm

Talk. The Uses of Seaweed

Join Martin Walsh from Bord Iascaigh Mhara as he talks about the traditional and modern uses of seaweed in Ireland. Age 7+

Talk. Brigid in Ireland & Abroad.

St. Brigid is a popular saint in Ireland but also in Europe. Join Merovee to discover the tradition of Brigid on the continent. Adult

Workshop. Brídeóg & Cros Bríde

"In the past garments might be stuffed with straw or hay to approximate to a human figure." Make a Brídeóg & Brigid’s crosses with Merovee. Age 7+

Demonstration. Mayo Spinners and Weavers Open Day

Workshop. "St. Brigid’s cross hung over door which did the house from fire secure"

Join Tom Doyle of the Education & Outreach Department to learn how to make a variety of St. Brigid’s crosses. Age 7+

FEBRUARY

Demonstration. Candlemaking

On Candlemas, 2nd February, people traditionally brought candles to be blessed at a special mass. Join candlemaker Áine Bell to make candles, traditional and modern.

Demonstration. Wood Carving

View some of the museum’s carved pieces and then join wood carver Robert Holloway as he demonstrates this craft. Age 7+

Workshop. Creative Writing: Memories

Use creative writing to remember, express and celebrate memories, past events and people with creative writer Bettina Peterseil. Adult

Workshop. Prepare for Valentine’s Day!

Make a Valentine card for someone special using the museum exhibitions as inspiration, with artist Agnes Nyland. Age 7+

Wednesday 15 February: 2.30-3.30pm

Talk and Display. Potato Varieties Past and Present.

Join David Langford as he discusses the history of the potato from the Famine to the present day. Learn about types, blight and recipes from near and far. Age 7+

Sunday 19 February & Wednesday 22 February: 2.30-3.30pm

Workshop. Traditional Gaelic Script

View the museum’s facsimile copy of the Book of Kells and afterwards join Albert Siggins to learn the fundamentals of writing traditional Gaelic script. Age 7+

Sunday 26 February: 2.00- 5.00pm

Tour & Workshop. Emigration and Reminiscence. Reflections on times past.

Tour the galleries with a focus on Emigration with Brendan McGowan and then join author & poet Terry McDonagh to explore this theme through creative writing.

Age 16+

MARCH

Wednesday 1 March & Sunday 5 March: 2.30-3.30pm

Workshop. Water Divining

Join Austin Mc Tiernan, Water Diviner, to find out about different aspects of water divining. Afterwards explore the grounds to find underground water systems. Age 7+

Try out the Museum’s new colouring book and afterwards view similar objects from the book in the galleries with members of the Education & Outreach Department.

Join Patti Moss as she introduces jam making and talks about the preparation of your garden at this time of year for a fruitful yield. Age 7+

Workshop. It’s Mothers Day. Summer Time Begins

Create your own special Mother’s Day gift with Brendan McDonnell of the Education & Outreach Department. Age 7+

Wednesday 29 March: 2.30-3.30pm

Storytelling Performance. Threads of Tradition

Let storyteller Niall de Burca entertain you with the adventures and deeds of ancient Irish hero’s such as Fionn of the Fianna and Cú Chulainn. Family

 

Craft Courses for Adults: January to March ‘06

Places are limited so book now….

Work on these full day courses with a variety of local craftspeople. All courses take place between 10am & 5pm. There will be a one-hour break for lunch.

Thursday 12 January: Wool Crochet

Crochet uses a decorative knitted looping technique with a special needle. It is used to make shawls, blankets and also smaller items like place mats and caps. Join Mary McGranahan on this one-day course to create your own piece. (Suitable for improvers)

Thursday 9 February: Basketmaking

Basket makers used a variety of materials, such as straw, rushes, willow, hazel, heather or briars to make reusable and useful containers of many sizes and for many functions. Make your own basket on this one-day course with Linda Scott.

Saturday 11 March: Watercolour Painting

Learn the principles of working with water-colours and then paint a picture using the museum as a source of inspiration with Bernie Garvey O Mara.

Thursday 23 March: Straw Craft

Strawboys took part in wedding celebrations wearing hats, masks or cloaks made of straw to disguise themselves. Join Ted Kelly to make your own straw boys outfit.

The Saturday Club Spring 2006

Find out more about what happens in YOUR museum by taking part in one of our Saturday Clubs.

This February we invite you to learn about, design and model a traditional farmers cottage. Learn about traditional housing by touring the Museum’s Housing Project and Hearth and Home exhibition. Then build your own miniature Irish cottage.

The club runs for four weeks and will take place on Saturday mornings between 10.00am and 12.00pm at the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life.

The starting date is Saturday 4 February.

If you are aged between 8 and 13 you can join us to have fun and learn new skills. The Saturday Club is free and all materials are provided. Each club is limited to 15. Book early to secure your place!

 

What’s On. Ongoing activities.

Our regular programme of guided tours of the exhibitions and of the House Building Project continues. A general guided tour of the museum is available Tuesday to Saturday at 12.00pm and also on Saturday and Sundays at 3.30pm. More frequent tours are available at peak times.

Art and craft workshops and demonstrations including basketmaking, weaving, spinning can be arranged.

A range of traditional games with full instructions are available to borrow during your visit to the Museum.

The National Museum of Ireland celebrates Seachtain na Gaeilge, with a range of events through Irish including tours, storytelling and music. Irish language Activity Sheets are available. All events are bi-lingual. Pre-booking is essential.

Tuesday 7th to Friday 17th March: 2.00pm Guided tours in Irish

Places are limited to 20. Tours in Irish will also be available throughout the week for groups. Pre-booking is essential.

St. Patrick’s Day Workshops

Curator Dr. Anne O Dowd will give a short talk on the life and festival of St. Patrick. Afterwards make traditional St. Patrick’s Day badges. Age 7 + (Bi-lingual)

Children’s Storytelling Session

With traditional storyteller, Gearóidín Breathnach. Age 5 + (Bi-lingual)

Sean-Nós Dancing and live music in the museum galleries.

Be entertained at the museum by the Cunningham family and local traditional musicians.All ages

Caitríona Hastings will explore various aspects of traditional medicine; the underlying beliefs and the verbal, herbal and procedural cures used to combat sickness. Age 14+ (Bi-lingual)

Traditional boats of Ireland - the variety of types.

With Dr. Séamas Mac Philib, curator of boats National Museum of Ireland-Country Life.
