Events to look forward at the Museum of Country Life this July

Events to look forward in the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar this July.

The National Museum of Ireland – Country Life have organised a number of special events for July. A selection of these events are listed below. All events are suitable for aged 7+ and take place between 2.30-3.30pm unless otherwise stated. Admission to each event is free of charge. Booking is required as places are limited.

On Wednesday 13th July join John O’Flanagan, Manager of the MET Office in Knock, for a presentation on the evolution of modern weather forecasting techniques in MET Éireann, while on Sunday 17th July, Norman Campion, Chairman, the Industrial Heritage Association of Ireland will give a talk on "Mills, Ancient & Modern: The Story of Grain; From the Field to the Bread on the Table". Afterwards view a model mill constructed by model maker Suse Reibisch.

On Wednesday 20th July, join Kevin Clarke of Clarke’s Salmon Smokery as he discusses smoked foods, preservation of foods & afterwards try a sample of smoked produce. On Sunday 24th July have fun playing traditional games with Brendan McDonnell from the Education & Outreach Department. Afterwards enjoy a picnic in the garden, while on Wednesday 27th & Sunday 31st July, we invite you and your family to enjoy a tour of our new temporary exhibition - Religion and Magic - which runs until the end of October. When worried or in despair people often turn to powers outside themselves for support. Join curator Anne O Dowd to explore these miracles, amulets & talismans.

Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd July: Woodturning: Learn the principles, techniques and skills to craft your own piece on these one-day woodturning courses with Ambrose O'Halloran.

SUMMER SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN. TRADITIONAL CRAFTS

Tuesday 26th - Friday 29th July: 10.30am-12.30pm

Spark your imagination, light up your mind, work with your hands to create a little piece of Irish culture with ceramics, rush, straw and wool.

Admission to all events is free but booking is required.
