Bealtaine, the ancient Celtic feast celebrating the renewal and freshness of Summer, is the theme of Age and Opportunity’s festival of creativity in older age. The National Museum of Country Life have organised a varied programme of events from which to choose.
Free guided tours of the Exhibitions.
Complimentary tea or coffee after the tour. The duration of tour is approximately 45minutes. Advance booking for groups essential.
“Wandering through the Weeds”
a day-long workshop with Judith Hoad.
This workshop entails a walk in the grounds of Turlough Park House identifying wild flowers and plants and finding out about the domestic medicinal properties. Participants will have an opportunity to sketch some of these in the worksheets provided. In the afternoon, Judith demonstrates the methods of making infusions, decoctions, tinctures, medicated oils and ointments and discusses the associated folklore. Places are limited.

Curator’s Hour. What’s Missing!
What folklore objects would you like to see on display?
We invite you to bring along old and interesting folklore or
country life objects (or photographs of them) that relate
to you or your homeplace. Meet the Museum Curators,
Dr. Séamas Mac Philib, Clodagh Doyle and Rosa Meehan,
and tell us about your objects and the stories behind

“The Museum in Your Life, Your Life in the
Museum”.
A series of art workshops with artist Marianne Heemskerk.
We invite you to create art works in response to your experience of the museum exhibitions and how they relate to your lives. Participants can attend all four of the workshops or select just one or more.
- Thursday 8th May Drawing with pencil, charcoal, pen and ink.
- Thursday15th May Collage using paper, fabric, wool, etc.
- Thursday 22nd May Working with paints acrylics and watercolours.
- Thursday 29th May Simple print techniques.
One and a half hour workshops.
Fridays in May 2.30-3.30pm
Music, Song and Stories in the Galleries.
Experience the museum exhibitions through music, song and stories. Participants are invited to be entertained by Michael Corcoran and Tom Doyle and join in with their own favourites. One-hour event
