Co SHC v Tooreen 5 Jul 03.

Keen disappointment was the singular reaction to the defeat to Tooreen in the 1st round of the Co Senior Hurling Championship in McHale Park on Saturday last.  For long periods of the game, the Mitchels matched their illustrious opponents all over the park, except in the one vital area – that of scoring.  Tooreen showing the benefit of regular quality hurling over the year, had that first touch quality which allowed them to seem to make space and get in a clean strike.  Mitchels on the other hand were rusty and thus off the pace.  With plenty of ball, the final movement broke down and put pressure on the team, which Tooreen capitalized on and took their points at will.  A deflected goal and poor defense left Tooreen leading by 3-11 to 1-2 at half time.  The second half saw a much-improved performance from the Mitchels as they kept their opponents to 1 –6.  A missed penalty half through the half did not help their cause but some nifty stick work brought a reasonable tally of 1-4.  Efforts to score goals could have resulted in this being higher as chances for points went a begging.  The Co Championship may be outside their ambition this year but with continued performance and commitment who is to say they may yet cause some shocks before the championship is over.

Co U12 Hurling Blitz Saturday 5 Jul 03

There was plenty of hurling and indeed talent on view in the Co Hurling Blitz, played on the Co Grounds last Saturday.  Teams came from all over the County and if the rules regarding age were slightly stretched in some cases, nevertheless hurling was once again the winner.  The Mitchels young guns played manfully throughout.  The work of the under age management in training and coaching is bearing fruit and the rewards will surely come in later years.  The Castlebar panel was as follows :-  Barry Lane, Sean Joyce, Richard O Dea, Marty Gallagher, Keith Fehilly, Gerard Duffy, Niall McCarney, Vincent O Brien, Helen O Malley, Niall Walsh, Shane Walsh, Alan Gavin, John Welby, Damien Togher, Ciaran Quinn, David Gibbbons, Cian Gavin
