From www.castlebar.ie MHAS Website Pictured below is a Famine Pot, now kept in the Heritage Centre at Enniscoe House, Crossmolina. Many of these pots, which were used by the Quaker community to feed the starving masses during the Great Famine of 1845-47, are still to be seen throughout the country, particularly along the western seaboard, where the failure of the potato crop caused great suffering and loss of life. The example shown is just one of the many still surviving after the passage of more than 150 years. The questions remain, does anyone know where these vessels were manufactured, and how many of them were brought into the country? Any information would be gratefully received.
