Plans for Westport marina knocked by tidal problems
Local marine experts have given the thumbs down to the proposal for a marina at Westport. Their reason was that the tidal nature the bay in Westport would not allow access to yachts at all times. Suggestions were made that the location of Rosmoney or Newport Bay would suit the planned marina better. Minister for the Marine, Mr. Frank Fahey, said that more money may be available if the marina project was viable; however it has been claimed that this was "nothing more than electioneering" on the Minister's behalf.

Castlebar exhibition will feature paintings by older people
The Mayo Education Centre will be hosting a new art exhibition by elderly people who have took part in an art project in the Sacred Heart Hospital since 1999. The aim of the project, says Deirdre Walsh Director of the project, was to give the people within care settings a voice and help them discover the artists within them. The project will also be shown in different venues over the coming weeks but the opening of the exhibition will be held in the Mayo Education Centre, Mayo County Council Arts Office on the 6th of March at 7.30pm.

Frank donates to community and McCreevy laughs all way to bank
Frank Durcan town councillor has decided to leave the money he received for his work on the town council in the coffers of the town council. However, it was said by the town clerk that the amount of €4,082 could not be left in the council and then a cheque of €2286 was forwarded to him. The other €1796 was retained for the tax-man McCreevy. Frank Durcan believes that town councillors at his level should not be paid for their service to the community. That is why he wanted to donate the money he received to the town council but when he was told this was not possible he decided to give it to the town band instead. He also said that it was outrageous that the tax man was taking some of the money that he intended to give to charity but also pointed out that he would have no problem in paying tax on the money if he was keeping it.
