Irish Film Archive to screen 'Ballroom of Romance' with Pat O'Connor and Kenneth Trodd

Pat O'Connor and Kenneth Trodd, the director and producer of this much loved film adaptation of a William Trevor short story will be available for a Public Q and A after the screening on which takes place on May 5th , 7.00pm at the Irish Film Institute in Temple Bar. Admission to the screening and a wine reception will be 15 Euro.

The Ballroom of Romance Irish, Colour, 1982, 60mins This moving and funny drama was warmly received by audiences and critics alike when it was first shown by RTE in 1982. Rarely screened since the Irish Film Archive is pleased to give audiences another opportunity to explores the bleak reality of life in rural 1950's Ireland via the microcosmic 'Ballroom of Romance'.

For many country inhabitants ballrooms represented a temporary escape from the monotony and isolation of everyday life. However, often they also cruelly emphasised the despair and frustration experienced within many rural communities.

With remarkable performances from an ensemble cast including Brenda Fricker, Cyril Cusack, Niall Toibin this sensitive piece won the Silver Drama Award in New York, and a BAFTA for best single play. The Irish Film Archive collects, preserves and makes available Ireland's moving image heritage and as is the repository for the National Film Collection. The Irish Film Archive's collection of over 20,000 objects, at the Irish Film Institute in Eustace Street. Archive screenings take place monthly at the IFI
