The Libertad at anchor in Killalla Bay.

The picture shows the Argentinean sailing ship The Libertad, at anchor in Killala Bay during a courtesy call to Co. Mayo, in 1998. If you look closely, you can see the cadets in the rigging at a dizzy height above the deck.

The two day visit was organised to honour the memory of Foxford born, Admiral William Brown, the founder of the Argentine navy. Members of the ships crew paraded in Foxford and a wreath was laid by the Argentine ambassador. A plaque was also unveiled at Newport to honour Sergt Major John King, a captain in Brown's fleet during the 1800's.

The tall ship is over 103 metres long and had a crew of 270.
