Anglers see Lake's Pollution as Election Issue
The Lough Conn and Cullin Fly-Fishing Festival has been cancelled due the horrendous state of the lake. The festival, which has been running for thirty-seven years and is well known internationally, will not be going ahead this year or even next year because of pollution in the lake. The Lough Conn and Cullin Anglers Association say that the lake can no longer be considered as a quality brown trout fishery. The Government is not implementing any measures that would improve the condition of the lake.

Mayo General Cutbacks "Deferred Until After Election"
Dr. Jerry Cowley has made claims that the announcement of cutbacks that will result in ward closures in Mayo General Hospital are being delayed until after the elections. Mayo General Hospital is one of the busiest in the country but due to budget problems it is possible that wards may be closed in the future. A spokesperson for the Western Health Board said that there has been no decisions made yet and no announcement has been postponed because of the election.

Mayo in May Photography Competition
Mayo County Council is calling all photographers, amateur or professional to go out with their cameras and capture the month of May in Mayo on camera. The photo can take in any aspect of life during May and can be of people, scenery, sport or heritage. Go to www.Mayolibrary.ie or the Mayo County Council offices or visit any Mayo branch library for an entry form. The categories are split up into Professional, Amateur, Primary School Student, Secondary School Student and Local Authority Staff and Members. There is a prize fund of €5000 and all entries must be in before June 19th.
