After the decision to enlarge the urban area of Castlebar, several major plans now fall within the remit of the town council. Included in the new applications are the 48 semi-detached houses by Danmore Homes Ltd. at Snugborough and the 76 homes by Bucko's developments also in Snugborough.

Western People has a New Look

The Western People has been redesigned into a 4 sectioned paper. It has a new typeface and an index page, which will help the readers find their way around the paper. This week they have also taken on a new reporter in West Mayo, Michael Gallagher, based in their Westport Office on Shop Street.

Mayo Association walkout in Dublin

At the recent AGM of the Mayo Association in Dublin many long-serving members resigned and walked out. " There was not a satisfactory explanation forthcoming to the meeting on a number of issues so we were left with no option but to resign" stated a long-serving member. The Mayo Association organises the Mayo Person of the Year and Meitheal awards. There will now be a special meeting in Mid-June.

Mayo Honour their War Dead

Over 1000 Mayo men died in the First World War and there is no monument to these men. These soldiers as well as soldiers who died in other battles will be remembered in a new book "The Mayo Book of Honour" which will be published later this year.
