George Moore Book Presentation
Among those who have visited the exhibition on the Moores of Moorehall at Castlebar Library were members of the Moore family who travelled to Ireland to attend the George Moore Summer Festival. The exhibition focused particularly on George Henry Moore (1811-1870), whose record of generosity during the Great Famine was exemplary as there were no evictions on his estate during that period and he did much to alleviate the distress. Running alongside was an exhibition of books and documents relating to his son George Augustus Moore (1852-1933), the novelist and playwright. The exhibition was mounted by Mayo County Library to coincide with the George Moore Summer Festival. The George Moore Society has received a gift of a limited edition signed by the author of Moore’s book Peronnik the Fool from Moore expert Professor Robert Becker from Georgia, USA. The Society has in turn donated the book to Castlebar Library for inclusion in the Moore collection there.
