Several Mayo schools projects have stopped
Some school-building projects have been delayed in the Mayo area. Projects like PE Halls and various extensions to schools such as at Davitt College, Castlebar, and McHale College in Achill have ground to a halt. The reasons given by the Department are that ’holidays’ and ‘changes in personnel dealing with files’ have delayed these projects. Members of the Vocational Education Committee are angry at the lack of progress on several of these projects.

Westport Cinema to go ahead
An Bord Pleanala has given the go-ahead for a three-screen cinema complex in James Street, Westport. An earlier grant of permission for the project by Westport Town Council had been appealed to the board by Mayo Movie World, Castlebar. Mrs Catherine O’Grady-Powers, Chairperson of Westport Tourism Organisation said, “Visitors to Westport just can’t believe that the town lacked a cinema complex” and she added that the members of the organisation are “pleased at the recent decision”.

Protest likely over Western Health Board cuts
IMPACT trade union has said that it wants to meet with the Western Health Board early this week to discuss the proposed cut of 170 jobs. The Union has warned that protest action was likely if the board maintained its present approach.
