Farming Leader Outraged by ‘invidious remarks’
A Mayo farming leader, John Comer of the ICMSA, has hit back after claims were made that farmers were increasingly turning to drink out of sheer boredom. Councillor Tom Quinn, manager of Erris Co-Op, said that it was depressing to see so many farmers cashing in their dole money every Friday and staying in the pub for the day. John Comer called on the councillor to withdraw his comments and apologise to farmers.

Mayo’s €6m housing boost
Mayo County Council has approved a €6m housing project in South Mayo. They have agreed on three separate housing plans for much-needed industrial and recreational site at Ballyhaunis and Claremorris. The plan will involve the demolition of old landmarks in Ballyaunis and the old Manor House Hotel on the Knock road.

Dooyork gold hoard comes home to Mayo
How fitting it is that the hoard of gold torcs, bronze bracelets and amber beds, found on the beach at Dooyork, Geesala in November of last year, should now go on display locally at the National Museum of Country Life Turlough Park, Castlebar. The display opens to the public on Wednesday 25th Sept and will be displayed until January 26th Jan 2003.
