Firsts

The Firsts faced Buccaneers on Sunday last but were unfortunate to lose 17-12. All Castlebar points coming from the boot of Paul Coady while Eugene Butterworth can count himself not to have scored a try. The bonus point gained could be important by the end of the season and next up is the game that everyone looks forward to as we travel in our numbers to Carrowholley and the clash with Westport. The game kicks off at 3pm and everyone is asked to get out and support the lads in one of the most important games of the season.

Seconds/development Squad.

There was no game for the development squad on Sunday but training continues as usual with our next game at home to Loughrea on the fifth of November. There is the possibility of a friendly so all players are asked to stay in contact with team management.

Mini Rugby

Its up and away for the mini teams on Saturday next as they travel to Castlebar for the first Blitz of the season in Westport. All teams from under 7 to under 12 are taking part and all players are asked to be at the Courthouse at 10am Sharp. Parents are asked to note that team buses will return to Castlebar at 1.30. Any Parent interested in coming out and watching the lads are welcome to do so.

Underage

Under 14

The Under 14 team were due to play Ballinrobe on Saturday but the game will now be played on Wednesday week at a time to be announced. Training continues as usual.

Under 18

Castlebar 10 Ballina 35

A very under strength Castlebar were put to the sword by a well balanced Ballina team in perfect conditions at Cloondeash on Sunday. Castlebar did not have a full team (due to injuries and other commitments) and were delighted to avail of some Ballina subs to complete their line up.

Against this backdrop, it was difficult for the Castlebar lads to put together a performance, but the pack stepped up and worked very well together. The Castlebar lineouts were excellent with Daire Mulgrew dominating proceedings, ably assisted by Damien McLoughlin, Colm Corbett and Thomas McHugh. The throwing in of Fintan Casey was also impressive, as was debutant scrum half, Barry Lydon. There were some great driving mauls from Alan Regan, Cian O Sullivan, and it was from one of these that Shane Casey touched down just before halftime.

In the second half, Ballina switched more of their subs, and the game was much tighter. After a quick handling move involving all the backs, with Mark Nash and Joseph O Neill to the fore, it was Fintan Casey who crashed over in the corner. Along with his excellent throwing in, thumping tackles and all around support play, it was enough to earn Fintan Casey the "man of the match" award.

This bunch of players has shown Great Spirit in difficult conditions, and with a few more players, they could prove a very useful team. All new members are very welcome.

Training is on Wednesdays at 7.00.

Team – Thomas McHugh, Damien McLoughlin, Colm Corbett, Alan Regan, Daire Mulgrew, Shane Casey, Cian O’ Sullivan, Fintan Casey, Barry Lydon, Joseph O Neill, Mark Nash,

Scorers – Shane Casey, Fintan Casey (try each)

Under 20

It was a case of a journey too much for Castlebar’s under 20’s on Saturday morning when they came up against a very strong Connemara team at Cloondeash. Despite playing some enterprising rugby and without several regulars, they were beaten 29-0 on the day. It was just a case of not to be and there are still some great games ahead with Gort away the next for decision. Players will be notified at training.

Lotto!

The draw was held last Friday week in Morans and the numbers drawn were 6,11,13 and 22. There were three match three winners who will be notified by members of the committee. It is important that more players come out and help with the tickets. People respond to the players and it is great PR for the club. So could as many players as possible support the lotto next month.
