Permanent Exhibition

The Natural Environment
Communities relied on the resources available in the immediate natural environment for self-sufficiency and survival. This exhibition looks at how the way of life in rural Ireland was influenced by the landscape and its resources. This is explored through vernacular architecture and illustrated by using different raw materials to make similar objects.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION

Whitewash & Thatch - Temporary Exhibition

On display is the work of a group of student architects from the School of Architecture in University College, Dublin.  In the 1940s they surveyed, sketched and painted in watercolour the thatched houses of a selection of villages around the country. Their work will be supplemented by drawings of houses from a previous decade in the work of Ake Campbell    (1891-1957) and Albert Nilsson (Eskerod), 1904-1987) visiting Swedish scholars, who travelled in the south and west of    Ireland in the 1930s.  A centrepiece of the exhibition will be a series of four pastel drawings by the artist Seán Keating of Culloty's House, Kishkeam, in County Cork.  It is the first time that this series is on exhibition.

Streets of London Exhibition

This primarily photographic exhibition will show images from four separate collections concerning Irish emigration to Britain, especially to London. The selection of images will look at emigration across generations and the themes will include music, tradition, religion, politics and faces of emigration. The images will be accompanied by snippets of the personal testimony of some Irish emigrants. The exhibition runs from the end of June until the end of September.

Songs and Stories of the Irish Navies Pictures, music and memories of the men who built Britain after World War Two. Presented by author Ultan Cowley in conjunction with the temporary exhibition 'Streets of London' Age 14+

Talk. Holy Wells and Pattern Days
During the summer months many people made an annual pilgrimage to religious sites noted for cures. Join Fr. Frank Fahy, as he discusses this topic.

Talk and Workshop. 'Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining'
Join Padraic McAvock, amateur MET station operator and local fisherman, as he explains the methods of  reading, measuring and recording weather signs and learn how to set up your own weather station.

Talk. Climate Change in Ireland in the 21st Century
Join John O'Flanagan manager of MET office in Knock, to learn how global warming might effect us in the future with rising tides and flood warnings

'Wandering through the Weeds'
Friday 28th July
A day long workshop with Judith Hoad. Identify wild flowers and plants in the grounds of Turlough Park House and find out about their domestic and medicinal properties. Afterwards Judith will demonstrate the methods of making infusions, decoctions, tinctures, medicated oils and ointments and will discuss the associated folklore.

Summer School for Children

Thursday 1st - Friday 4th August. 10.30am - 12.30pm
Spark your imagination, illuminate your mind, work with your hands to create a little piece of Irish Culture. This Summer see if you can write like the monks did for the book of Kells with Albert Siggins. Age 7 - 13 yrs
