From www.castlebar.ie MHAS Website (Photo 1) This very interesting west-facing cross-slab stands alone in a field overlooking Bunatrahir Bay in the townland of Kilbride near Ballycastle in North Mayo. It is a multiple cross design with expanded terminals, very much resembling some of the Early Christian examples on Inishmurray Island Co. Sligo. The cross itself is about 86 cms tall, and the overall height of the slab is about 150 cms. Photo 2 below) The Kildun pillar stone is situated near Ballycroy. On the west face there is an equal-armed cross incised within a circle of approximately 38cms in diameter. The total height of the slab is approx.160cms.
(Photo 3 bottom) The Dadreen cross-inscribed slab is situated near the Silver Strand approx. 8 miles west of Louisburgh. It is incised with a Greek cross, with a small stem projecting downwards from the bottom arm. The cross is carved in relief and has triangular expanded terminals. The height of the slab is approx.190 cms.
The slabs depicted are just a few examples of the many such monuments to be found throughout Co. Mayo. Others will be shown on this web-page from time to time. © Copyright 2003 by www.castlebar.ie and the author |
