St. Brendans Well, Roskeen.

On Sunday May 16th the annual St. Brendan’s Day Mass was celebrated at Killeen graveyard, Roskeen, just off the Newport/Mullranny road. The celebrant was Fr. Declan Carroll and there was a large congregation from the local area.

St. Brendan’s well is situated on the seashore and there is a ‘leacht’ or stone altar beside it. In the adjoining graveyard a bullaun stone is close to a modern statue of the 6th century saint.

There are other wells dedicated to St. Brendan at Killmeena and on Inish Gloire off the coast at Cross, Belmullet.

St. Brendan the Navigator was born near Fenit, Co. Kerry and would be described today as an adventurer having taken part on some very dangerous voyages in the name of God. He is also reputed to have sailed to America but this is very dubious. St. Brendan died in 577 or 583 A.D. at Annaghadown, Co. Galway and he is buried in Clonfert, Co. Galway.
