Aerial Photography of Sites near Kilcummin

The aerial photo below shows clearly some archaeological sites which are difficult to see on the ground but are clearly visible from the air.

Site 1 is possibly a barrow, which over the centuries, was eroded away by the waters of the nearby stream.

Sites 2, 3, and 4 are anomalous sites which have not been satisfactorily classified. At least twenty-five of these strange ‘monuments’ found in adjoining fields were ploughed out some years ago during land reclamation.

It was first thought that these sites marked the spot where the French forces camped in August, 1798, but since similar sites have also been found on Aughris Head, in Co. Sligo, that particular explanation does not stand up. Other possible explanations are, they are barrows, or that they had stands erected on them for drying seaweed, or turf. - What do you think?
