Turlough could be world centre for folklife
The Connaught Telegraph
this week.

Deputy Enda Kenny expressed the view that the Museum of Country Life at Turlough Park should become an international centre for folklife studies. The entire region will benefit from having the National Museum here and it is expected that students of folklife from all over the world will come and stay here. Deputy Kenny obtained a Cabinet decision to locate the museum in Turlough Park when he was Minister for Tourism in 1997. Likewise the purchase of the house in the early 1990s by Mayo County Council was a far-sighted decision by Mr Des Mahon, Mayo County Manager.

Mayo Ladies finest hour leaves them one step away from historic treble
The Connaught Telegraph
this week.

Mayo Ladies senior footballers are now just one step away from an historic three All-Ireland Finals in a row. They had a superb win over Clare in the semi-final on Saturday the 8th in Ballinasloe. The Clare team were favourites to win after winning the national league title but they were no match for Mayo. The Mayo team were missing a number of their star players due to injury but they very obviously have a magnificent panel of players to draw from. The final will be held in Croke Park on Sunday September 30th and we all owe it to this magnificent team to give them as much support as possible.

Manager accused of environmental terrorism!
The Western People
this week.

In a debate about car parking on Castlebar's Market Square Alex Fleming, Town Manager, was accused of environmental terrorism by Cllr. Frank Durcan when he proposed to provide new parking places outside Marsh House. A total of 23 new parking spaces were proposed in the vicinity of the newly revamped Market Square. Two at the fish shop on Duke street, 10 additional at John Hanleys/Market Square car park and a possibility of 12 more at Marsh House. This was in response to complaints from traders on the square that they have been deprived of parking and loading space by the new layout of the Market Square. Mr. Fleming asked that people be patient and said that the balance of the lighting, trees, railings and information plaque, etc. would be completed very soon.

New York Notebook
The Western People
this week.

John Fitzgerald's regular New York Notebook appeared in the Western People obviously written before the fateful events of 11 September. Among other items, he covered the Mayo Ladies defeat of Cavan in the Big Apple snatching the Fahery Cup from the team that held it for the past six years; the third century of catholic education in New York as millions of children head back to school. This first Catholic school was St. Peters in lower Manhattan, opening in 1800. Photographs of the Mayo Ladies, engaged couple Kathleen Rowand (Belmullet) and Brian Prior (Leitrim), Camie O'Sullivan and Elaine Donovan. Let's hope that next week John Fitzgerald will not be bringing us any sad tales of Mayo people missing in the dreadful attack on New York last Tuesday.
