Bogus IDs in circulation runs the main story in The Connaught Telegraph this week.

Fraudsters have succeeded in copying the new National Age Card which was recently hailed by the authorities as " Tamper-proof ". Bogus cards, some of which have been seen by the Connaught Telegraph, are circulating in Mayo at the moment, much to the alarm of publicans, and the Garda authorities. The fact that the National Age Card, which is being issued to all those over the age of 18, can be forged, is extremely worrying, as it is the only proof of age that will be accepted by publicans. The key to the security of the Age Cards was said to lie in its hologram - a photographic pattern that gives a three-dimensional image when illuminated with a special light. However, the hologram involved can be downloaded from the Internet by a skilled computer operator.

Tennis Club left in the lurch by Iarnród Éireann The Connaught Telegraph this week.

Plans by Castlebar Tennis Club to run a special train to the Curragh Racecourse on Saturday, as part of their "Races of Castlebar" fundraising promotion, have been thrown into chaos. The progressive club, hoping to raise sufficient funds to build a new clubhouse, has been informed by Iarnród Éireann that the train has been withdrawn because of the unavailability of a driver. The club agreed to pay full fare for the train, approximately £5000, and made arrangements for 470 passengers to travel. The agreement fell through because Iarnród Éireann were only able to supply one driver for the day in question when two were required. The club offered to pay drivers themselves for the occasion, but the offer was declined.

Alphonsus left for Castletown in Laois, thus ending a 112 - year link between the Order and the community of Castlebar. It is planned to hold a major function later this year to mark the presence of the brothers and their work in the town over the years.

New Castlebar Swimming Pool in Doubt? The Mayo News this week.

Whether or not a new public swimming pool will be built in Castlebar is dependent on funds, according to Assistant County Manager, Alec Fleming. Addressing the issue at a meeting of Castlebar U.D.C. last week, Mr. Fleming stated that while the council wished to have a new pool built at Lough Lannagh, costs indicated that it might not be possible. The only option then would be to improve the existing facility at Swimming Pool Road. He said he would get back to the Council on the matter.

Corrib Gas central to future development of Mayo industry The Western People this week.

The development of the Corrib Gas find is inextricably tied in to the business development of Mayo and the industrial development of Mayo and the north west, the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council has insisted. Cllr Annie May Reape told a meeting of Mayo County Council last evening that just as Cork has been central to the development of Kinsale Gas, Mayo must be central to the development of the Enterprise Oil field off Belmullet. She was speaking following a presentation by Brian O'Cathaun and Rosemary Steen of Enterprise Oil to a meeting of the authority in Castlebar and expressed concern about the commitment of the Government and An Bord Gais to do anything to ensure that the region benefits from the gas find.

New limb-fitting clinic at Mayo General Hospital The Western People this Tuesday.

A new limb-fitting clinic for the region will be held at the Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar on a fortnightly basis. The clinic is being held in conjunction with the Mayo Amputee Group. The development of this new service for the region is the culmination of a unique partnership between the hospital and a voluntary organisation. The clinic will mean that patients who previously had to travel to Galway for their care, can now have their treatment much closer to home.

Fine Gael to select Mayo's Dáil runners on Sunday The Western People this week.

The Fine Gael Convention to select the candidates to contest the Mayo 5-seat constituency in the next General Election will be held in Travellers Friend Hotel in Castlebar on next Sunday evening, at 6 p.m. This is part of a strategy by the party at national level to have their candidates nominated and in the field long before the advent of the election. It is virtually certain that the three sitting Fine Gael TDs for the county, will be ratified on the ticket. The party will select four candidates and the main issue to be decided will centre around who will be the fourth person to get the nod.
