St Mary's is a 170 bedded Psychiatric hospital of
the Western Health Board with an industrial therapy unit within its
grounds providing sectorised community psychiatry to its catchment
area, Co. Mayo, with acute inpatient and long-stay beds.
It also provides a Rural Training Centre and an Alcohol Counselling
Service.
A 40 bedded Acute admission Unit (St Teresa's) is also located on the
grounds.
A large part of the original hospital building now
houses the Castlebar
Campus of the Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology
A new Oratory for the use of St. Mary's Hospital was dedicated and
blessed at a special ceremony by the Archbishop of Tuam, Dr. Michael
Neary, on Tuesday 5 May 1998.
This oratory will be used for the celebration of daily Mass and other
religious services for hospital patients and staff. St. Mary's
Church, which is located in the grounds of the hospital will no
longer be used for hospital purposes. The new oratory, which is
located in the main hospital building, is readily accessible to the
patients of the hospital, many of whom are now elderly.
