Helsinki snow at night. Google + did this with its 'auto awesome' filter. It was snowing at the time of taking the photo alright but the Samsung Galaxy didn't quite capture the flakes at night.

Across the icy lake - we were told that 5 cm or so of ice is sufficient to allow people to walk across the lake safely. The aim was to drill into the ice and take a water sample.

Helsinki Street in the morning with temperatures at -14 degrees C. The Finns were quite happy to welcome the real winter - it had arrived very late but temperatures were now satisfactorily low.

Snowy birch trees photographed from the taxi on the way back to the airport.

Waiting to take off but deicing of the aircraft is essential in these low temperatures. Again this is a Google+ animated gif automatically produced from a sequence of photos taken from the window seat in Row 48 at the back of the large Airbus A330.

Finnair - out the window somewhere en route between New York and Helsinki - flying time 7.5 to 8.5 hours depending on which direction you are heading.
