Foxes Tale on the Windy Gap Road

On the 3rd of July 2009, I was driving from Castlebar to the Windy Gap at 9.30am when I saw a dead fox, that had most likely been hit by a car, lying on the road. I saw a smaller fox running away, so I stopped the car and waited. A few seconds later the smaller fox came back. Over the next 5 minutes the young fox dragged the bigger dead fox all the way from one side of the road to the other and into the ditch. I don't know where they went after that as I didn't follow them into the wilds.

During these endeavours, a couple of cars went past and each time the smaller fox left the scene (back to the side of the road it had come from and not to the nearer side where it was pulling the dead fox to) coming back again when the car had passed.

Does anyone know where the fox might be taking the dead fox to and for what purpose? Is this a common thing or did this young fox just take a notion?
