I was speaking to a local recently, who told me the apparently true story about the wedding, of a daughter of a retired army officer, who lived in a large stately house just outside the town. This happened during the 1950’s and it was billed as THE social wedding of the year. Most of the professional classes were invited; solicitors, doctors, etc and a lot of them boasted and bragged about the upcoming occasion in the local pubs and how privileged they felt to have received an invitation. A lot of expensive gifts were purchased for the happy couple and off the townsfolk went, dressed in their best suits and frocks. After the church, when all the guests gathered at the big house, this is where the story changes depending on who’s telling it. One version is that they were given a glass of wine/champagne and told thank you for coming but the party’s over whilst the very special ones went up into the House. The other version is that they were taken into a tent and given a drink and sent on their way. Apparently, they (and who would blame them) were so embarrassed to come back into town until darkness fell. Anyone any memories?
