I had a look at the beginnings of Lavelle’s Bakery. Located on Bridge Street, it was known as the Riverside Bakery and opened in August 1919 by a Mrs. Anne Lavelle, a widow. Her husband, Michael had died in 1900 and Anne lived nearby at No 31 Bridge Street where she had a grocery shop.
A member of an old Castlebar family, she purchased the bakery premises from a Miss Catherine Hynes and was assisted in the business by her brother, Austin. He was a master baker and resided in Tucker Street. He was also a founder member of Castlebar UDC. Austin didn’t marry and died in 1928. Anne had at least three sons, including Thomas A who was also a long time member of the UDC. Her daughter, Margaret married Prof. J.P. Ryan, St Gerald’s College and resided in Ellison Street. Both of their sons, Der and Joe continued the family tradition and served in the local UDC.
The property passed down the family when it was rebranded as the Upper Crust in the 1980’s and continues successfully to this day.
