I remember it well for so many reasons. Remember the cafeteria upstairs and the great scenery of the girls coming home from the convent after school? And the day a classmate "swiped" the leather from one of the brothers and cut it into little pieces and put some pieces in all the milk jugs....if our kids did that we'd kill them....and Marian Mc Nicholas's father was the manager.....and the vast array of goods on display....and the newly arrived guard who stopped us and said that it was alleged that one of us broke the big front window with a snowball!
....and the story told of the time a certain genteel lady was taking quite some time to decide on which rashers she wanted to buy, and the assistant said in exasperation "ara Mam, for jaysus sake, will ya make up yer fuckin mind" and of course he was duly reported to the manager and an apology was issued forthwith. Both genteel lady and shop assistant have since gone to their eternal rewards! And that reminds me of the regular visits across the road in Castle Street for May Leonard to go to Christy Hoban's shop. The regular order was 2 rashers, 2 sausages and a nice egg for Tommy (her brother) and the lads behind the counter used to say "having a party again May?"
