I was sad to hear today about the death of Butch Moore who used to sing with The Capitol Showband in the sixties.Seemingly he was diagnosed just a few weeks ago as having cancer of the oesophagus. Another very popular member of that band Paddy Cole, a super clarinetist, was speaking to him last night on the phone and Butch was due to have a discussion with his medical specialist on Thursday of this week, and unfortunately he died suddenly in the early hours of this morning.
Butch was Ireland's first Eurovision representative with "Walking the Streets in the Rain", which came 4th. in 1965. That performance was celebrated as if he came first and don't forget that it was a huge accomplishment for Ireland to have a song in the Eurovision.
He was the first to record a Phil Coulter song, and Phil always says that but for Butch, his song writing career might never have got off the ground.
That Phil Coulter song was "Foolin' Time".
I was shocked to hear that Butch had been based in the States for the past 35 years, how time flies. He was playing at functions around St. Patrick's Day and did a tour of Ireland with Brendan Bowyer, Roly Daniels and the showband show last October / November time.
Hope the above re-kindles a few memories for you.
May Butch rest in peace.
