A Father Dixon was transported to New South Wales in 1800. By this time an estimated 25% of the colony was Irish. The governor allowed him to celebrate Mass once a month under surveillance. The first Mass and first Catholic marriage in Australia were celebrated in Sydney on Sunday, May 15,1803.
