Great memories JDP. I remember swimming in a regatta at Carrick-on-Shannon(?). We swam in the Shannon and against the current! No medals on that day. Donal McEllin and I did our advanced life saving exam at the board on a wet, cold, blustery day. The examiner stood on the diving board "the better to see" but he could see very little. One manouver required that I, the rescuer, sink Mr. McEllin, the "frantic one being rescued", and break his grip on my neck by slick actions which included a kick to the shoulder. We fumbled in the cold dark water, I kicked and missed, but still came up released from the grip and with Mr. McEllin shouting that I had damaged his shoulder!! Final test passed with flying colours.
