John F Quinn’s article, written in the 1930’s, says the stream rose “..from the springs at the creamery supplying the old reservoir…” From this it appears the creamery was at the spot where the stream arose. As far as I can figure it, the reservoir would have been in Corradrish townland between the Bellavary Road and Tuckers Lake/Ballina Road. Across the road from your house ?

The loop in the river behind Grove House is in very low lying land and the ‘island’ in the loop probably represents marshy boggy land. I have always been puzzled by the 'canal’ extending from the loop into Grove House. This is probably not a canal but a separate stream, spring fed, flowing into the river. The Connaught Telegraph in 1852 noted “By August the Breakwater at the new bridge near the Grove is almost completed. But as the farmers watch their fields they are haunted by the memories of the recent years.” Its not clear whether the farmers were concerned over a recurrence of blight or flooding. Also, its not clear what benefit the breakwater provided. The loop in the river was still there in 1870. It only disappeared after drainage in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s. The bed of the Castlebar River was canalized in 1850 apparently as famine relief work. This may have increased the water flow in the river.
