You are correct. The Bolands lived between Heneghan's
Chemist shop and the Sunflower Inn (Padraig Flynn)
on Shamble Street. The street area where Heneghan's
Chemist shop was is now often referred to as Ellison
Street or Main Street. Its original name was Market
Street. Shamble Street ran from it to Shamble Square
which came to be known as Market Square. The original
Market Place was between the site of the Connaught
Telegraph office and the parking lot of the Bank of
Ireland. The old brewery was down behind Josie Burke's
garage.The old distillery was approximately where
the car park is behind the Catholic Church. Both
were close to the Castlebar river for water.
Current day Chapel was known as Upper Chapel Street.
The New Line was called Lower Chapel Street (future
home of cowcabbage). The old Fair Green was
located in the angle between Gallows Hill Road
and current day Chapel Street about where the boys
primary school is or, if you prefer,behind Conie
and Aine McAteer's house. Faulkner's was called
Grove House. What we called the Fair Green,near
Springfield, was originally called Pigeon
Park. This would be close to where Jarlath and
Edward Killen lived (I think their dad was a vet?).
The old gaol was between the Imperial Hotel and
Gavins (what later became a Bank of Ireland and
is now a nursing home). The Rogers lived in
Gavins (Shane, Michael and a sister).The new gaol
became the site of the County Hospital. The old
hospital was where the garda station is now. It
served as a cavelry barracks afterwards. The old
infirmary was located between the Green Bay Cafe
(is it still called that?)and the entry to the
old county council yard. The Artillery barracks
was located behind the cinema - any good shots?
The old Bridewell was located where Cathal
Duffy's garage is now. Placed here it was close
to the entrance of the Lawn and no doubt more
accessible to Lord Lucan (aka Bingham) as the
gate lodge to the Lawn was located where St.
Angela's now is.
