As far as I know the system was devised pre 1921 (hence the "I" for Ireland)
Northern Ireland still uses a variation of the old system. Im not sure exactly how it works but the "I" at the beginning has gone but now they all have "Z" at the end in a three letter four digit format. Also I think its based on districts rather than counties. RE: Illegal numberplates Ive seen Cars in West Belfast with "(IRL) 00 AM ****" Instead of the official (GB) EKZ **** format !
