Posted by Murrisk on November 11, 2002 at 08:03:37: The 3rd battle of Ypres, better known as Passchendale (a village 9 kms from Ypres), was begun on July 31, 1917. It finaly finished on November 10, 1917. Casulties exceeded 600,000. Two Irish divisions, the 16th (Catholic) and 36th (Protestant, fought side by side. November 11, is the anniversary of the Armistice which was signed in the Forest of Compiegne by the Allies and the Germans in 1918, ending World War I, after four years of conflict. Over 14 million people had lost their lives when WW I finally came to an end. At 5:00 A.M. on Monday, November 11, 1918, the Germans signed the Armistice. The cease fire order read:- Over 350 Mayo men were killed in World War I. Private Patrick Murray from Doocastle was killed at 9:00 A.M. on November 11, 1918. However, at 10:58 A.M. Canadian George Price was shot dead. He was a fair haired 22 year old who had originally enlisted in the 68th battalion in his home town of Regina, Saskatchewan, on November 29, 1915. Private Price is considered the last soldier killed in action on the Western Front.
