Paddy Ryan was stationmaster in Castlebar and lived at the house in the station. His wife was Bridgie Tunney from Mountgordon. Boys and girls in the family, including Una Shiels, Ballyhaunis. The Ryan family referred to by Sambo lived where John Hanley has his supermarket on the Station Road. House was called 'Ryanville.' The father, Sam Ryan, was a Land Commission official. His mother may have been one of the Beckett family from Turlough, also lived at Spencer Street. Mrs. Ryan was from Glasgow, I think Simpson was her name. Two sons, Sam and Jimmy. Sam was a teacher in Cleveland, Yorkshire, and died suddenly while in America some years ago. Met Jimmy some years ago in Morans of The Weir, Kilcolgan, outside Galway, and we reminisced at great length about Castlebar and the lads we grew up with. Still loves the town, naturally. Jimmy and Sam were great all-round sportsmen and played rugby, soccer, Gaelic and tennis with great success. Jimmy was headmaster of a school in Dublin. A very nice family, the Ryans.
