It's a pity that there are no direct statistics available to enlighten us on the many things that affect our daily living. However, when I was knocking around Castlebar let's say between 1936 and 1940 and doing my fair share of drinking it was reckoned that the population of Castlebar was approx.6000 in the Winter time and that the number of pubs was about 86.
Dick O'Donnell who had the pub on the corner of main st. and linenhall st, told me that himself.
This piece of lore was confirmed by Mrs, Short who had a pub half way down main st. not too far from the Humbert Inn same side of the street. Mrs. Short had a very selective clientel which she catered to after hours - blackout for the widow Short was a candle in a jam jar covered with brown paper with a hole cut appropriately so that she could pull the pints and keep an eye on us at the same time. A fine understanding widow.
