There is an old photograph of the hanging tree in the Lawrence Collection (?). The photo was taken in winter from approximately where Hanley's shop is looking towards the courthouse. I assume the old small concrete pillars with the chain still exist. If they do, you count to number 11 from the entrance to the mall/green at the bottom of Spencer Street going towards Rock Square. The hanging tree was large and lent over the street somewhat. There were no trees of any size, only saplings, around by the courthouse, by the old Green Bay cafe, and by the old council yard. The only place with large trees was the Mall, which is the path from Rock Square to the protestant church, and around the methodist church. The hanging tree was one of these. There was a water pump immediately on the righhand side where you enter the mall/green at the bottom of Spencer Street. In later years there was a pump by the courthouse at the bottom of Spencer Street, but none on the mall/green.
