Except for years of crop failure, the peasentry would sell any produce they could. Primarily to pay rent and secondly to fund the emmigration of their children. Often famillies in an area would combine resources to send one person over. The growing community abroad would then send money home to fund further emmigration and also to support the familly at home. The neighbours, friends and relations who had emmigrated would support those at home, while maintaining a close community in particular areas of America
