Ah! I remember it well.

I know parents all over Castlebar hated it and I remember been warned not to go in.

Strange though it may sound now it had an almost illicit feel to it. Not quite an opium den but almost as smoky.

It was commonly known as the jew hall, a politically incorrect term that was meant to reflect how difficult it was to cadge money for a game, or to cadge a ciggie.

I remember you would go in and there were pool table in the front (4?), towards the back and down the steps were the video machines and pinball machines. There was a little office in the back frequented by an employee (a small man, one of the Quinns I think).

I remember it was frequenetd by all types, mods, metallers, greenbacks, anyone remember them?

I am not sure why it eventually closed but many parent really did not like it and perhaps it was too much trouble for the company that ran it, Pardival, if I recollect correctly, Parsons and Surdival?, I think.

The sad thing about the demise of the pool hall was that it really wasn't that bad and it kept kids off the street. I remember gang fights, violence, and theft all got worse after it closed.

Paugie Cunningham could tell us more I am sure.
