The cast of the Patrician Pageant in 1961 grew beards for the production. It was an outstanding success and received massive publicity nationwide. It was staged in McHale Park in Castlebar and drew thousands of people. The sets, the costumes and the overall production drew thousands of people. Bob Kilkelly, Michael Joe Egan, Andy McTigue and other local people were involved in the pageant. Castlebar had never seen anything like it and it has never been matched since. There wasnt't much money around at the time. Any Redmond, God to good to him, built many of the sets, in his sparetime. It was a great Castlebar effort, the ould stock and newcomers to the town coming together in a great united effort. Nowadays we seem to knock everything in the town, the council and other groups working together for the benefit of the town. We have a great town, but we can do without the knockers and the allegations of corruption none, of which have been proved. Up the Bar!
