Some people from Czechoslovakia associated with the Hat Factory in Castlebar . . . Sidney Glass, Newport Road; Fred Klepper, Station Road; Cernik family, Newport Road, house now known as Tully Farm and occupied by Derrig family. It was formerly the residence of the Moclair family. Paddy was on the Mayo 1936 team, All-Ireland champions, had a brother, Fr. Philip, and sister, Mrs. O'Neill; father, T. S. Moclair was a journalist and very well known in Castlebar in the 1920s and 30s, close friend of T. H. Gillespie, editor of the Connaught Telegraph in the 1920s and 30s. There was a Dielinz family associated with the hat factory as well as a man named Fred Kornisch, buried near the republican plot in the Old Cemetery on the Westport Road. His widow may have married Mr. Porges, subject to correction. Fred's remains were exhumed 20 years ago by his relatives and reburied or cremated in Belfast. There were lots more people working in the hat factory. Nice booklet written some years ago about the factory. I am sure that many of very many parts and a good local historian, Ernie Sweeney, may have a copy of the booklet.
