We went from Lucky bags to Mulranney.Hmmmm.
Fizz bags come to mind more readily although I do remember Lucky bags, just cant remember what my last one contained.Mulranney is a different story.Along with other Irish dancers from Dot Redmonds school,I entertained visitors at the hotel.Nothing like Riverdance I'm afraid, although there were some excellent dancers in her school.Mavourneen,Aggie,Bridie and many others. The beaches/strand were wonderful but you had to walk forever to get to the sea.Who can forget the Fuscia and wild Rhododendron blooming all the way from Newport to Achill.
I consider myself very lucky that as children we spent 1-2 weeks in Lecanvey every summer. My family was not wealthy by any means and my mother would budget her money every year to have that holiday in Lecanvey. As children we may not have thought that Lecanvey was as posh as Mulranney,Achill or Enniscrone but we certainly had a wonderful time, good or bad weather. It was away from the routine and a chance to make a new friend or renew an old.I suppose because it wasent a very popular resort,we had the the beach to ourselves a lot.Digging in the sand, making sand castles, making car shapes, seats to sit in,paddling in the rock pools, catching little creatures, gathering dilisk and carrageen for my mothers blanc-mange.Swimming at the pier.Walking along the beach at night, striking stone against stone to see the flint light up in the dark.Great times. Thanks Mam and Dad!
