Today is February 1st. I asked one of the family if they had made any St. Brigid's Crosses today and she said no, not really. We tried to make some paper ones she said!
Do you remember the build up to Feb. 1st.? Everyone told to get the rushes and bring them into school and then trying your best to make the darn things. We had to go out to what we called the woods, which is now part of the Curragh area, and cut the rushes. This area went up towards the railway line and out to St. Mary's hospital farm land. All built on now.
I can remember well, the kitchen table covered with the makings of the crosses, and the floor too. I think the priest used to call to the school to bless them.At that time, almost every house had a St. Brigid's Cross hanging up.
Happy St. Brigid's Day to you all......
is tar eis Feile Bride, ardoigh me mo thoil,
O chuir me i mo cheann e, ni stopfaidh me choiche,
Go seasfaigh me sios i lar chontae Mhaigh Eo.
I hope the Irish spelling police don't comment on this!
